Do you trust me? Of course not, most of you have never met me.

Did you know it only takes humans 13 milliseconds to process an image versus text? And we are bound to remember 65% more of what we see compared to 10% of what we hear. With 90% of what our brains process being visual, photos really are a game changer for our businesses.

For the good, and the bad.

So how do you gain trust with an online audience in 13 milliseconds?

Your imagery.

In an age where technology continues to reshape the way we interact with the world, artificial intelligence (AI) headshots have emerged as a controversial topic, raising questions about authenticity and trust in business relationships. While these AI-generated portraits may seem enticing on the surface, they come with a hidden cost — a cost that could potentially undermine the trust you’ve painstakingly built with your clients.

AI technology has undeniably made impressive strides in generating lifelike images that can easily pass for authentic photographs. From flawless skin to perfectly coiffed hair, these AI-generated headshots present an idealised version of ourselves that often deviates from reality. The temptation to present oneself in the best possible light is understandable, but the seductive allure of perfection can inadvertently erode the human connection and relatability that drive successful business relationships.

Let’s face it, in today’s day and age we normally ‘stalk’ our fav brands through all of their socials, fall in love with them, and then buy whatever it is they’re selling. Even if it’s more expensive than another brand. If a brand has fostered my trust, I already believe that purchasing this at a higher price is better value.

It’s all about trust

The cornerstone of any successful business relationship is trust. When clients discover the headshot they saw on your website or social media isn’t an accurate representation of you or your team, the trust they’ve placed in your authenticity takes a hit. This disillusionment can lead to scepticism about other aspects of your business as well.

Also, where’s the personality? While you might look perfectly coiffed, the AI headshots out there quite often don’t have that magnetic quality that a real photo of you has.

Using these images is akin to using images that were taken 10-20 years ago. The whole point of having images updated is to look like your images. Ever since the inception of Photoshop, “that image has been Photoshopped” has been like a dirty phrase, carrying many negative connotations. So why do we think AI headshots are any different? Is it because it’s still a novelty?

Authentic human connections are formed through relatability and shared experiences. We want to see the fun you, the tired you, the outfits you love, and the messy office you didn’t clean before you created that reel.

When your headshot doesn’t reflect the genuine you, clients might find it difficult to establish an emotional connection, which is crucial for fostering long-term relationships.

In an increasingly transparent and socially conscious world, the repercussions of using AI-generated headshots can be far-reaching. Misleading clients by presenting AI-enhanced images as authentic photographs raises ethical questions about honesty, transparency, and the integrity of your brand.

What headshots to use instead

In a world that values authenticity and genuine connections, here’s how you can ensure that your business remains true to its roots:

  • Embrace the imperfections that make you human. Choose headshots that reflect your true self — smile lines, quirks, and all. Authenticity is relatable and fosters a sense of trust.
  • Your journey, experiences, and character shape your business identity. Share these stories through your imagery to create a narrative that resonates with your clients.
  • If you feel that your current headshot doesn’t accurately represent you, consider getting new photographs taken by a professional personal branding or headshot photographer. Transparency about the change can strengthen trust.

Embrace the real you! We have been fighting for less-photoshopped, curvy modelled, disability-represented, LGBTQI+, natural and organic imagery out in the world for years. Don’t go backwards now.

Your customers are demanding authenticity, don’t settle for anything less.

In a business landscape that demands transparency and human connection, prioritising authenticity in your headshots is not just a smart move—it’s an ethical imperative that can determine the success and longevity of your brand.

Let’s be real, if you’re just looking for an updated LinkedIn shot, you can probably get away with the AI headshot, just be sure to not fall into the trap of choosing one that is an unrealistic version of you. If you’re running a business, I urge you to throw this idea in the trash and find the best photographer you can. Read that first paragraph again. Imagery is everything!!!

If you find the right photographer, you will be able to feel relaxed and connected to the process, creating the best images you’ve ever seen of yourself that truly connect with your dream clients. So go find them!

We want to be in our businesses for the long haul. For the longevity of your business, I firmly believe being the real you will always win.
