The difference between headshots and personal branding photography

Brisbane personal branding photographer, Marigold Meagher explains the difference between headshots and personal branding photography.

The really short answer is one is a photograph of you and the other tells the story of your business through beautiful imagery. With most of our businesses online these days it is the game changer that every business needs! Tell me more you say? Read on friend and find out how to revolutionise your business...

Head Shots are the typical business image you might use for platforms such as LinkedIn, your website (depending on your profession) or for your employers formal platforms. It is your typical head and shoulders shot, eyes looking at the camera with a plain background. You can smile in these but they are typically a bit formal so no laughing shots. For this style of shoot I would send you recommendations on what to wear to make you look your best. We would shoot for about 20-25 minutes and you would be done.

Personal Branding is a lot more in depth (and a lot more fun).

Why do Personal Branding? When you first start out in business you have to think about the fact that nobody knows you or your brand. So how are you going to get people to buy what you're selling, instead of anyone else in your area doing the same thing? They have to get to know you and trust you. Personal Branding helps you tell your story. Think of it more as documentary style imagery. We capture you, but also what you do and how you do it. Do you make ceramics? I would then come to your studio photographing the beautiful things that make your brand come alive, while I watch you work. I photograph not only you, but your space, your tools, your hands at work and of course some beautiful head shots. This way you have heaps of imagery for all your marketing platforms for months at a time.

Can you tell me what you do in your business without saying a single word? Do you have the images that tell the story of your business, in the right tones that are on brand, in gorgeous lighting and stunning quality so you truly look professional?

Having beautiful imagery is the only way you can compete with the competition and with everyone scrolling at a million miles an hour, you better be able to grab someone's attention without them reading a single word.

How it works: When you do a Personal Branding shoot with Eve Editorial you will get a questionnaire. This helps me deep dive into your brand, for example; What are your colours? What is your business selling or providing? Are there any stereotypes that you want to stay away from with your images? What mood do you want to create, is it loud, bright and energetic or is it calm, neutral and serene? . All the answers then help me to create a moodboard, vibe and vision for your brand. We schedule a Zoom strategy meeting to chat about locations, outfits, my moodboards and all the fab answers to your questionnaire to make sure everything is just as you dreamt it would be so I can best represent your brand.

On the day of your shoot we will spend 3-6 hours together depending on the package you choose and the different locations we have selected. We shoot you in several different outfits, angles, moods and poses (which I will direct you in so don't fret, it's all very natural and fun while looking professional). You end up with tonnes of imagery that you can use on all your different platforms and in your marketing.

Getting your imagery on point from the beginning sets you apart from your competition and also helps consumers recognise your brand when they see your media on any platform. Staying current and fresh while your brand grows and changes, your hair colour or style changes or even your locations as you progress is also super important. Having imagery that looks like you, now, so people know what to expect when they meet you in person is always imperative to a good brand.
